Antique shopping and yard cleaning
A lifetime supply of Dr.Pepper!
Last week I went to visit some relatives and on my way back I stopped off in a town to check out their antique shops. I’ve been needing some lamps and some fans, and figured they would look appropriate in an old house.
Two blades on my Robins & Myers fan will need to be bent back into place since it rattles real bad. Also seems to have a power problem so I’ll have to re-wire it; the switch in it is sort of odd. The Kenmore runs fantastic though. I really like these old fans because they can blow air better than any cheap crap made these day, provided they work. I'll have to include some pictures of them in the next post since I don't have any on hand at the moment.
There was a place with a model train set, including antique booths, ice cream and soda bar! I took a few pictures of it to share here. You can click on them for a larger resolution.
I spent a lot of time clearing out some of the jungle in my back yard. The last foundation inspector I called out didn’t want to check anything beneath the house because of all the poison ivy and poison oak growing around it, then he ghosted me, so I whacked it all down and bunched it up into piles. Got bit up by mosquito's, ants, and ivy rashed for it too. I tried being safe about it, but wasn’t safe enough. Anyhow It looks better now, and much easier to access.
I also found the septic tank, or more like un-earthed it. There was soil, roots, weeds, and leaves all over it. The cement lid was heavy as all friggin get out! Unfortunately, the whole tank is filled in with dirt. I can’t see how anyone lived here just 4 years ago. This has been here for a very long time.
I had figured that replacing the septic would be the case before buying the place, and estimated that it would cost between $10,000 to $15,000. Digging the soil out isn’t going to work either. The large cement slab I lifted off of it had a build date of 1963 inscribed onto it. It was just a hole in the ground with brick lined walls.
I’m thinking that for now, I’ll build an outhouse in the back until I get a few other repairs out of the way first.
Thanks for reading my blog!
